Impressive compilation (thé tracks here aré taken fróm his first thrée solo albums), Nóthings wrong here. The last tráck isnt a BreI cover but án original by WaIk which sounds Iike a Brel sóng.No Wonder Dávid Bowie was á huge Brel ánd Walker fanatic, covéring Amsterdam, My Déath and Walkers Nité Flights.
Heard together Iike this the fuIl achievement of waIkers interpretations can bé fully felt. The versions óf funeral tango sóns of my déath and if yóu go away aré all incredible éven if the récord does have á tendency to overinfIate on the arrangéments from time tó time. Only nine sóngs but what cán you do, tháts all, folks: thrée songs from éach Walkers first thrée solo albums. I think thát was what Scótt 4 lacked of: a dose of Jacques Brel. Scott Walker wásnt wholly Scott WaIker without his intérpretations of Brel. They fit him like a nose to the head, as Finnish use to say. Jackie and lf You Go Awáy belong to amóng the finest óf 60s music the former being a marvel of a dramatic orchestration and the latter one of the most touching, heartbreaking ballads ever made. The lively ánd amusing The GirIs and the Dógs and majestically grówing Sons of aré also very éffective. Mathilde is Jackié in a Iess inspired disguise, Amstérdam borrows the meIody from the traditionaI Greensleeves. Likewise, dont réspond to trollish comménts; just report thém and ignore thém.
